The mood was high, and the celebrations raged on as Team Penn State basked in the glory of their hard-fought victory over Team World® in what will surely be remembered as a classic Ryder Cup showdown. Yet, amid the cheers and toasts, one man wasn’t quite in the same celebratory spirit.
Our reporters, thinking their day's work was done, were ready to call it a night when they spotted none other than Penn State Captain Nicholas "Squeaky Nick" Vellky making quite the scene in the cigar lounge at The Grand Resort at Avalon.
Sensing an opportunity, they approached Captain Vellky, and he was all too eager to share his grievances.
"The Chophouse, are you kidding me?" Captain Vellky squeaked with characteristic agitation. "Worst steak of my life. I can't believe anyone eats there. I get a better steak from Smiley's Tire when I order four fresh ones."
It could have ended there, but anyone familiar with "Squeaky Nick" knew better. "F the F’ing Chophouse! My forearm’s cooked from cutting that steak for minutes at a time. Biggest waste of money in my life. I’m never coming back."
For most, this might have been a passing moment of frustration. But Captain Vellky, renowned for his relentless complaining, has earned his nickname for good reason. Whether it’s food or fairways, "Squeaky Nick" makes sure his voice is heard—loudly and persistently. Who knows, his squeaking may just influence a change in venue if tournament officials eventually fold under the pressure of his relentless complaints.
